Latest player under the spotlight is Dave Jenkinson. A veteran of bowls at the top level over many years and a former Waterloo runner-up, Dave now commits a lot of his time to the running of the Panel and raising the profile of the game, as well as turning out for Sale XL and SMRBL in the Stockport & District league.
Have a read of his Bowling Profile. Anyone, and I mean anyone can have a go as I'm sure every player has something interesting to share regardless of what level they play at. What about some of our more senior bowling colleagues who remember the days when there were 2 and 3 deep watching parks matches, and when Dennis Mercer was THE player to beat. Or some who are new to the game and have a different perspective on things.
Anyway, why not have a go at the profile thing yourself by dowloading the questionnaire HERE (click 'Save' when it opens, or copy and paste into something like Microsoft Word). The questions are only a guideline so feel free to add in extra detail or leave out bits you don't fancy, or send something completely different, then email back to us :- feedback@stockportbowls.co.uk and next 'It Could Be You'.
Name : Dave Jenkinson Age : 57 Occupation : Retired now I suppose Club(s) : Sale X/L, SMRBL Bowls you use : Several, mainly 2.10 wood on heavy greens & 2.10 Drakes when it's quick Best game you've ever played : Suppose it has to be final of Waterloo , even though I lost Best player(s) you've ever beaten : Must be Brian Duncan, in S-Final of old Manchester Evening News competition & Arthur Murray, a great player who won everything the game had to offer, but he also knew how to lose Your best bowling quality : Never give up, has to be, as I often start slowly Your worst bowling weakness : Don't practice Best bowling achievement : Playing for Sale X/L in their glory years plus individually, County Merit , Parks Merit, Blesma, Stockport Trophy, to name a few wins & finals of Waterloo & Manchester Evening News Open & Vernon competitions Biggest bowling disappointment : Being left out by Cheshire in the County Final @ Houldsworth One rule you'd introduce/change : The game needs “sexing up” to bring more young players into the game. No good has come of the rigid application of the rules to the extent where there are now very few characters in the game. Years ago, when stamping was allowed, if not permitted, the players seemed to more involved and that then rubbed off on the spectators, creating an atmosphere not seen these days, even at the famous Waterloo. Favourite green : Probably Irlam Steel Most dreaded other green : Nursery, can't win there & Wheatsheaf in St. Helens the hardest green in bowls. Ambition : To old now, other than to be able to carry on playing for many years to come Funniest bowling moment : To many to mention except for listening to Freddie Hulmes comments when playing for SMRBL Best piece of advice you could give : Practice, practice, practice. If I had followed my own advice, I may have ended up a good player. |
