The final of the Bill Adshead Plate was fought out between 'A' Division's Poynton Sports and 'B' Division's Woodley Sports who received a 25 chalk start.
After weeks of constant rain sunday turned out to be warm and sunny and the Spring Gardens green looked in good order to stage the final. Poynton came out fighting putting four of their best men out first in the hope that the 25 chalk start would be all but wiped out, but it was arguable who ended up the happiest. Poynton took 3 winners through Paul Mason, Lee Fletcher and Dave Smith, but Mike Heald went down 21-16 to Woodley's Alan Poole to redress some of the balance. With only 11 knocked off the handicap, Woodley would have been more thanl pleased with the containing job they'd done.
On to the middle four and Woodley demonstated stength in depth with more experienced campaigners. Yorkshireman Dave Mee fought out a titanic tussle with Dennis Jones that went right to the wire with a quality last bowl from Dennis ensuring the chalk went to Poynton. Poynton captain Kevin Flannery did his job beating J.Dodd 21-15 whilst Malc Sims gave Harry Sturgess no chance, romping in for the days best win 21-9. Woodley's Steve Crowther, showing all his competition experience put the tie back into the melting pot with a great 21-10 victory over Peter Beard.
And so onto the last 2 games with 8 more knocked off the handicap to leave Woodley a narrow 6 in front. With arguably the S&D first divisions most improved player, Neil Thelwall and Mr Dependable and ex county player SJ Allen to come for Poynton, they looked to be favourites as the Poynton supporters got behind their men sensing a close finish. Thelwall was up against another Woodley man with years of experience in Brian Wells, but showing what a good player he is Thelwall raced into a big 15 - 4 lead. In the other game however Darren 'The Dazzler' Burgess hadn't read the script and built up a similar lead against Steve Allen, both players putting them very close. Poynton need Thelwall to get to 21 quickly so that SJ would know exactly what he needed to do for victory, but showing tremendous fighting qualities Wells refused to lie down and battled to get some vital two's and close the big gap. With each chalk he got, Poynton's hopes of victory diminished. He finally succumbed after battling back to get 16. In the other game SJ had been doing his level best to claw back Burgess's big lead but at the very moment Thelwall clinched his victory, the Dazzler sealed his 21-13 win, giving Woodley a 9 chalk victory.
Congratulations to both teams who made it a great final in front of a decent crowd enjoying the sunshine, and the beer !.
S&D's Ian Potts was on hand to present the trophy to Woodley captain Mike Coram.
