Cracking Pairs Competition on Saturday with some top class bowling which once again went to demonstrate the fickle nature of Pairs bowling with Colin Price and Mike Gee edging out Charlie Roberts and Matt Jones 21 - 20 only to be turned over in the next round by Peter Fielding and Mike Clough 21 - 3.
Fielding and Clough looked unstoppable as they saw off Paul Leah and Lee Lawton 21 - 18 in the semis only to come up against Ryan Bancroft and Jack Hargreaves in the final. Ryan and Jack had beaten Billy Smyth and John Rothwell 21 - 15 in the other semi and recorded a similar scoreline to win the sweep.
We also had our own version of Djokovic versus Nadal with a two hour thriller between David and Gareth Gwilliam and Dave Knott and Lee Turner finishing 21 - 20 backed up by another 21 - 20 with the result this time going against the Gwilliams in favour of Billy Smyth and Jonn Rothwell.
Thanks to all who supported the event.
Sunday saw Andy Jones record a first win beating Keith Brooks 21- 17 in the final with the Consolation going to Geoff Moxon with a 21 -19 win over David Gwilliam.
Next bowling Sunday 5th Feb 10.30 strike out.

Jamie Bramley reports :- The Love Lane winter bowling continued after christmas with the green holding up well after mixed weather. Its strange to see the green running better now than it used to do during summer seasons. On the 27th December 24 bowlers turned out for a random pairs. The final was won by Jamie Bramley and Ian Stokes who defeated Tommy Lang and Steve Ellis 21-10. The popularity of the random pairs meant we would open the year with another which went to John Davies and Ian Stokes who whitewashed Steve Ellis and Tommy Lang 11-0. The Winter round robin re-commenced on Wednesday 11th January with inclement weather. John Davies and Jack Bramley secured first place ahead of Neville Hodson and Alf Hill.
The Sunday bowling continues every week with bowlers asked to book in by 9-45am and Wednesday round robins require bowlers to arrive by 12-30pm. The Winter Championship's show Jamie Bramley top followed by Steve Ellis and Chris Barlow. The main thing at Love Lane is not the winning but having a game and keeping your eye in for the summer months. I am pleased to report we are attracting many learner bowlers who are enjoying the winter scene and are competitive via handicapping. We have two up and coming juniors each week Danielle Miller aged 15 and Sean Miller aged 17 look like they have big futures. The winter programme has been so popular that bowlers are already keen on play continuing again in winter 2012/13. Everybody is welcome and at £3.00 for an afternoons entertainment why not come down, if you want directions or any information you can ring me on 07582234425.

Ashton Cricket results :- Geoff Moxon reports :
The Pairs on the 27th December was a great success with a gripping final between Dave & Gareth Gwilliam and John Hambleton & Kath Wall. Before the final I asked both pairs if they wanted to play to 21 or to shorten the game to 15 up (either way it would finish under lights) Both agreed 21 up although Johnny & Kath may have regretted it after scoring 11 in 3 consecutive ends to lead 15 - 4. The fightback started and scores eventually levelled before John & Kath edged into the lead again at 20 - 18 only to be undone by a 3 at the final end which saw the Gwilliams home. Our thanks to all who supported us - the raffle for a bottle of Bells was won by Dave Walker.
With Sunday this week falling on New Years Day we decided to have our regular Comp on the Monday. Great turn out considering the late notice (and difficulty contacting some regulars) 28 took part with 16 also entering the Consolation - the final was won by Mike Gee who saw off the Gwilliam's challenge - Gareth in the semi 21-18 and Dave in the final 21 - 13.
The Consolation was won by Ian Bardsley

Geoff Moxon, Organiser at Ashton Cricket reports :-
Be careful what you wish for, I said last week we would prefer snow and ice to all that rain and guess what we got this Sunday - still managed to get the green cleared for a preview of the next "Dancing on Ice" - all we were lacking was Torville and Dean.
Paul Leah won beating Ian Bardsley 21- 20.
We'll be missing the next 2 Sundays but to make up for that we've got a Pairs Competition on Tuesday 27th December starts 10.30am - I believe its fully subscribed already but as soon as I get the full draw I'll let you know.

With the George & Dragon Winter League Season a third of the way through, just 3 chalks separate the top three teams. Last years title was decided at the last end of the last game and this years title fight looks as though it's going to be just as close. Ten mixed teams of 4, predominantly S&D league based players play each Saturday on the superb George & Dragon green with an atmosphere and banter to rival any top league game. The Soup Dragons (Mike Gee, Colin Price, Ryan Bancroft, Gareth Gwilliam, John Bancroft, Andy Hallas and Chris Haynes) lead the way from the Chipalatas (Steve, Jack and Jackie Hargreaves, Colin Leishman, Glenn and Gary Beeley) with the Bulldogs (Matt Jones, Mike Bacon, John Davies, Andy Raymond, Billy Smythe, Martin Bacon and Iain Dunbar) in third place. John Bancroft, Jack and Steve Hargreaves lead the individual averages.
There is always hot food and drink available and the introduction of the Fantasy League this year, with over 80 entries, always ensures plenty of interest in each game. The league also has a great website (see the link at the top)

Stockport Parks Vets held the finals day of the Jack Hammond Pairs on Thursday 15th September. A lovely sunny afternoon and a superb bowling surface at the Victoria Club set the scene for a great finals day. Some great bowling and a few surprises kept a good crowd entertained. Jack Cooper and Roy Hibbert (H.W.M.C) never got to grips with the green and Jack Bramley and Eric Renshaw (Heaton Norris) recorded a comfortable 21-10 victory. Pete Collier and Pete Donaghy (South Reddish) prevented an all Norris semi-final beating Mike Nay and Brian Lowe 21-19. Meanwhile holders Roy Bramwell and Dave Wilson (H.W.M.C.) played Brian Thurgoland and Frank Tracey (Torkington). The holders surged into an early lead but some great bowls put the Torkington men into the semi where they met Duggie Ralphs and Pete Ellis (Shaw Heath) who had won a terrific game 21-19 against Arthur Downs and Tom McEwan (Alexandra)
In the first semi the two second teamers from South Reddish seemed to be on a mission racing away from Jack Bramley and Eric Renshaw to lead 20- 10. The Norris men clawed back level and then lay game until Pete Donaghy promoted a Collier bowl for a heartbreaker. In the other semi the Torkington men again bowled well to beat the plucky boys from Shaw Heath.
In the final It looked as though it was a step too far for the inspired South Reddish B team men as Thurgoland and Tracey raced away to lead 8-0 and 12-1. The Reddish men fought back well but the Torkington pair were not to be denied and ran out 21-17 winners. The pair bowled well all day and were worthy champions. Brian Udale and Ray Wilkins took care of the pegging and thanks go to the sponsors M.A.C. and to Jack Hammond himself for their support. The Victoria again provided a perfect venue and a superb green.

Charity Match
A magnificent turn out at James Norths saw Mermaids Men venture to the Theatre of Nightmares and the Tamesiders back garden where Smarty's Barmy Army were lying in wait. The match of 18 a side saw the Tamesiders come out on top by 30 odd chalks. Even the Mermaids suggestion of a further 6 games of pairs wasn't enough to redress the balance as the Barmy Army eased to victory. Man of the Match was Matt Jones and Young Player Of The Match was Natasha Sands. Although the big winners on the day were the two charities that the match was being played for Wish Upon A Star and Christies. With all players paying £5 to play, along with a raffle, the pedometer challenge, a football card and a chase the jack competition, £500 was raised, easily the biggest amount in the 5 year history of the Charity Match.
Huge thanks to Brian Smart and James Norths for organising and hosting the event, the generous sponsors for donating prizes and above all to all the players and spectators who turned up and made the event such a success.

Commiserations and congratulations in equal measure to Jack Holland who lost in the final of the Junior All England played at Winnington Park, Northwich. Jack just lost out to the Potteries player Josh Towey, 21-19.
Jack
eased into the last 16 with a 21-6 win then put out Whaley Bridge's Adam Hawker 21-10. His quarter final clash with Jack Marrow proved a trickier task for the young George and Dragon player as he just got home 21-19. The semi final was a bit easier as he moved into the final with a 21-14 victory over another Potteries junior Sam Bailey.
