Further to the cost cutting exercise announced by Stockport Council which proposes to close many of Stockport's parks greens, I've received the following from Peter Fuller Secretary, Stockport Greenspace Forum (Stockport Greenspace).
Stockport Greenspace Forum is the umbrella group that supports the 70+ groups in Stockport that care for green spaces, including parks, country parks, allotments and cemeteries. As the proposed cuts, either next year or the year after, will affect all green spaces including bowling greens I thought I would make contact with someone to let you know we are campaigning hard for a reasonable and rational plan of cuts not just an unplanned thoughtless swipe. On our website Stockport Greenspace is a link to the consultation on the Parks cuts.
The feedback we have had from SMBC is that the company handling the consultation (and we have a Freedom of Information Act request in to the cost of the consultation) have never had such a huge response in such a short time to any consultation they have done. Please encourage all your members, families, neighbours, visitors, to go online and complete the consultation which only takes a minute.
I have attached leaflets you could print to give out to remind people of the website link and also a short version of the printed questionnaire which can be completed and then the details entered online for them. There is no limit to the number of entries that can be made from a single computer so one person can collect and enter the data. Our Networking Day is May 18th (Invitation link below). The agenda is taken over this year to the proposed cuts and alternatives we can put forward. We have monthly meetings with Head of Public Realm and SSK Business Manager and a document will be presented to them from the results of the day.

It was a bad day for both local teams on show in the World Team Championships at Irlam Steel. Houldsworth WMC lost by 20 to Thongsbridge from Yorkshire. Only Lee Turner and Lee Dale managed to register wins for the "Knuckledraggers" as the Yorkshiremen ran in the other 6 winners. South Manchester RBL were marginally in front of Onchan from the Isle Of Man after the first couple of games but defeats for Mike Bacon, Billy Smythe and Ian Dunbar put Onchan 18 in front and on course for the second round. Matthew Jones and Graham Hulbert played superbly at the back to try and pull back the deficit, but it proved slightly too much as the Legion went down by just 3. The strength of the teams in the competition was demonstrated as both Thongsbridge and Onchan went out in the next round to strong teams from Tixall, Merseyside and St Josephs from Chorley.

In the World Club Championships at Irlam Steel, new S&D team Burbage from Buxton cruised through their first round game against Yorkshire's Canalside 158 to 107. Pick of the bunch was a 21-1 demolition by Paul Bradley. In the qualifying game they faced Newdigate from the North Midlands and shared 4 winners a piece with the Buxton men going down agonisingly by just 1 chalk 131 to 130. Craig Shore carded the best result winning 21-6 closely followedby Colin Parrott's 21-11. But losses by Jon Guess, Chris Adams, Bill Adams and JP Hall sent the Midlanders home happy with victory by the narrowest margin.

Local clubs make a three pronged attack on the World Club Championships at Irlam Steel at the start of the season. Newly elected members of the S&D Burbage set the ball rolling on Sunday 31st March when they take on Canalside from Yorkshire. If they get past the tykes it'll be a qualifying game against either Shropshire's Meole Brace or Newdigate from the North Midlands. Sunday 7th April sees both S&D champions Houldsworth WMC and Derbyshire's Longdendale champions South Manchester RBL take to the stage. The Knuckledraggers have a tough opening game against Yorkshire's Thongsbridge. If Terry Gale's men are successful they would be up against the Greville Arms or Tixall from Merseyside. South Manchester RBL open up against the competition's furthest travellers as Onchan from the Isle of Man make the trip over the Irish Sea.
Success in that match and the Legion men have a massive challenge against either St Josephs from North Lancs the 2011 champions, or crack Yorkshire outfit and British Parks champions, Meersbrook. All matches get underway at 11am. Good luck to all three local sides.

Three new teams enter the Saturday Longdendale league. Friendship in Romiley make a welcome return after a couple of years away. Delamere Park in Gorton make their debut in the league whilst The Victoria, Stockport enter a second team. The additional teams has meant a bit of a re-jig of the two divisions. Woodley who should have been relegated from the 1st now survive. Delamere go straight in to the 1st whilst Friendship and Victoria 2 start in the 2nd division.
