New Mills Dave Jackson picks up one of the games top honours winning the Spring Waterloo after a comfortable 21-12 final victory over Wales former Waterloo winner John Bailey. Jackson in good form after picking up the Allens Green title a couple of weeks ago demolished Dean Ferris 21-1 in his first round. Things were a bit tougher in the last 16 as Yorkshires Graham Hickey managed 15 against the Macclesfield man. It was an all Macclesfield tie in the quarters as Jackson came up against well fancied Grant Soller who was last years runner-up. Soller having played marvellously well in his first two games couldn't quite reproduce that form as Jackson went on to win 21-12. In the semi things got easier again with another demolition, this time of Whitchurch's Charlie Weaver 21-3. Jackson never looked like losing the final and went on to pick up the trophy and a cheque for £700. Other locals in action were John Hambleton who lost 21-17 to Terry Glover in Round 2, Gareth Gwilliam going out at the same stage to Bailey 21-7. And it was Bailey who ended Waggon & Horses Noel Burrows hopes in the semi final winning 21-16.
Well done Jacko !.

Royal Oak's Mike Bacon wins the Longdendale Merit with a narrow 21-19 victory over Chapel Park's Steve Barber. Barber looked to have it in the bag leading for most of the way but Bacon put together a fighting finish and some very close bowls on the very difficult James North's green. Barber put out S.J Allen 21-17 in another close match whilst Bacon had it a bit easier playing some great stuff against Romiley Arms Keith Fantom, winning 21-8.
Thanks go to James North for the green and Bill Worthington and his wife for the refreshments and to young Jack Holland for his card marking and officiating in the final. And also to Andy Bilyk from the league for running the competition

It's the last 32 of the Spring Waterloo this sunday (24th) starting at 10am, with several local players in the mix. New Mills' Dave Jackson gets proceedings under way against Stoke's Dean Ferris. Houldsworth's Stuart Goodwin takes on Blackpool local Peter Grimston. Nursery star Grant Soller, trying to go one better than last years runners-up spot starts against Ian Pendlebury whilst Waggon & Horses and bowling legend Noel Burrows plays Dave Semper. After a return to top level bowls last season Hyde's John Bancroft takes on Warrington's Brendan Brady. Nursery's Gareth Gwilliam has a tough draw against Derbyshire county man Matt Kelly-Whalley whilst the 'Educator' himself, John Hambleton will be hoping to progress past Coventry's Steve Pratt.

It was a weekend to remember for one bowler especially after leading Derbyshire to a county win over Greater Manchester the previous day, for the first time in the Trophy's history, the previous year's winner, Keith Fantom (Romiley), retained the title on Bank Holiday Monday.
Keith defeated Roger Morgan (Sale) 21-12 in the final.
In the semi finals, Keith defeated James Dennis (Chesterfield) 21-7 with Roger defeating Gary Marshall (Chesterfield) 21-10.
The standard of bowling was very good throughout the day from all bowlers with some very close games. Glossop Bowling Club would like to thank all bowlers who played and thank them for their support.

Graeme Wilson adds the Woodley Classic to his early season victory in the George & Dragon Invitation taking home a cheque for £350 after a comfortable 21-13 win in the final over Paul Dudley. G.I survived a major scare in round 1 when Matt Jones came back from 16-6 and 20-16 down to level at 20-20. A couple of loose bowls at the final end just allowed Wilson to sneak into the next round. Dudley was also finding it tough in round 1 when Stoke's Andrew Owen pushed him all the way with Dudley just getting home 21-19. They both found it easier in the Quarters with Dudley despatching Blackpool's Tommy King 21-6 and G.I easing past Paul Hawker 21-13. The semis were just as comfortable as G.I beat Jason Locket 21-10 and Dudley beat Nicky Tideswell 21-13. In the final it was a cagey affair with both players playing some excellent and loose stuff and both hitting plenty of strikes as they levelled at 11 across. Wilson just seemed to go up a gear at this point and started to pull away playing some great bowls on some tricky long swinging round peg marks over the top of the crown. Dudley played some great bowls which didn't count as Wilson pushed on to a 21-13 victory. A decent sized crowd was on hand to see him receive the cheque and trophy, after which he congratulated all at Woodley Sports on the running of the competition and quality of the green.

Losing quarter finalists also in the money were Rob McKernon, Mel Hobson, Dave Hallam and Matt Jones.

George & Dragon Tom Heyes Memorial Trophy. Tournament favorite Graeme [G.I] Wilson won the event for the third time having won in 2002 and 2004. An excellent Crowd turned out to see 16 of the countries top crown green bowlers compete for a total £1,000 prize money, despite the cold and wet conditions. In his first game Wilson scraped past Tommy Johnstone 21-20 after being 20-17 in arrears, producing a great bowl to count game. He then disposed of Sheffield's Chris Brown before beating the 2006 winner Dave Mcdermott 21-15. In the final he came up against Stoke's Dean Ferris who accepted a last minute invitation to play, due to the withdrawal of Andy Spragg. On his first visit to the green he played some great bowls to beat Lee Lawton, then last years winner Kerry Morris and 2007 winner Glyn Cookson. The final produced a great game of bowls which ebbed and flowed throughout, G.I. just showing his class to confirm his status as one of the top two Crown Green bowlers in the country as he took the title 21-17.
