Who says there are no juniors coming into the game. Two of our locals juniors did very well at the recent Fleetwood festival. Split into age group categories 9 year old Calum Broadhurst won the Under 11's competition beating Ryan Walters (11 years old) from Birmingham 11-9 in an exciting final. In the Over 11's competition 12 year old Ben Gloag beat Thomas Rolinson, 13 year old junior and a local bowler from Thornton. From 6-5 up Ben then ran out to win 11-5. Mums and sisters, Julie Broadhurst and Jackie Gloag were very proud to see them both win, and play well, in front of a large crowd. All juniors that took part in the competition were a credit to the game. Below Calum and Ben receive their trophies.

Mixed fortunes for our local counties in the Endsleigh Senior county championships. Greater Manchester's gamble to play their home leg at previously untried James Norths paid off handsomely as they walloped Yorkshire by 53 dropping only 3 chalks. Grapes Dave Walker with a 21-6 demolition of Dave Fox was the best winner and took the Mn of the Match award. The away side held Yorkshire to an 18 chalk victory and so took the match by 35.
Cheshire had 8 winners in their home leg at Metro Sports but three bad losers and some fighting scores from North Lancs and Fylde restricted the margin of victory to just 13. Noel Burrows and Andy Murray were the home side's best winners at 21-9. The away side in Blackpool had a similarly close match with 5 winners to 7, but a disastrous 2-21 card made the difference as they lost by 17, meaning a 4 chalk defeat overall.
Derbyshire started their campaign badly losing overall to South Yorkshire by 9 chalks. Away in Doncaster Richard Peach's Man of the Match performance winning 21-7 was the main highlight. He was joined in the wnners enclosure by New Mills team mates Craig Shore and John Hall, but with 8 losers the team went down by 33. At home in Derby, seven winners wasn't enough as the South Yorkshire lads put in a battling performance to go down by just 24.

The first round matches take place this Sunday (2nd) in the Endsleigh County Championship with several local players representing Cheshire, Derbyshire and Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester get underway against a strong Yorkshire side and have made a bold move by playing the home leg on the previously untried James North green. Houldsworth's Lee Turner leads out at No 1 and takes on Lee Lawton. Chris Heyes takes on the games top player in Graeme Wilson. Matt Jones makes his county debut on a green he knows well against Nathan Webster. Colin Price is up against Graham Higgins. Grapes Dave Walker plays Dave Fox. Young Jack Hargreaves plays Mark Regan. George and Dragon veteran Tommy Heyes is up against Graham Hickey. Mike Gee plays Robert Hitchin, Gareth Gwilliam plays Nicky White whilst anchor man John Bancroft has a tough game in prospect with Ashley Daykin.
Derbyshire have a local derby with South Yorkshire. Local players make up the bulk of the Derbyshire away side who travel over to Woodlands Park Social in Doncaster. New Mills Richard Peach, Johnny Guess, Phil Clapham, John Hall and Chris Adams are joined by county regular Paul Hawker from Whaley Bridge and theres a much overdue debut for George and Dragon's Colin Leishman.
Cheshire start off against North Lancs and Fylde with the home leg at Metro Sports in Stretford. Nursery men Grant Soller, Andy Murray and Andy Proctor take on Paul Brett, Stuart Kenyon and Mick Prescott respectively. Waggon and Horses legend Noel Burrows plays Dave Watters whilst Poynton Sports Lee Fletcher is up against Neil Helm. Three Houldsworth WMC are in the away side at Layton Institute, Carl Armitage, Kevin Wainwright and Charlie Bebbington are joined by New Mills Dave Jackson.
All matches start at 2pm.

Royal Oak's John Davies picks up the £170 winners cheque as he beats Mark Bennett 21-8 in the final of the Romiley Arms Good Friday 1 dayer. Davies brought all his winter experience to Romiley and never looked in danger in the final or preceeding couple of rounds. In the quarters well fancied Colin Leishman was despatched 21-12 whilst in the semi Royal Oak team mate Paul Dooley went the same way 21-14. In the other half of the draw Bennett saw off last years runner-up Lee Fletcher 21-16 in his quarter final and then flew into a 14-5 lead in the semi against John Hambleton. Hambleton couldn't get back onto an edge he'd been standing on top of the jack on in previous rounds and Bennett went on to record a 21-13 victory.

A healthy Good Friday crowd assembled at the Dragon for the ninth running of the Tom Heyes (Senior) Memoial Trophy and the were rewarded by some terrific bowling by 16 of the countries top players. G.I. Wilson and Gary Ellis were installed as favorites but in the first round G.I. faced the man he beat in last years final, Dean Ferris and Ferris raced into a 12-1 lead before Wilson could get going, Ferris winning 21-12. Ellis had no problems, beating 2006 winner Dave McDermott 21.4 Ellis proceeded to the semis, with a 21-11 win against Lee Lawton where he faced Dean Ferris who had a tremendous tussle with Callum Wraight, Ferris going 14-1 in front before Wraight fought back to 19-20 before Ferris got home 21-19 The top half of the draw then brought together Ellis and Ferris, and what a great tussle. It was nip and tuck all the way with Gary Ellis showing his class and getting home 21-19. In the other half of the draw Bob Hitchen progressed to the Semis with imprerssive performances against Glynn Cookson and Kerry Morris, where he faced Sheffields Chris Brown, who had removed Graham Hickey and John Bailey. In the the Semi final Brown got onto his favorite mark across the middle running out a 21-10 winner.
The Final proved to be a classic, Gary Eliis kicked off with 3 doubles to go 6-0 with Brown struggling to get going. Ellis was still in command at at 15-7 and 16-11 before Brown got onto his mark across the middle and leveled the game at 19 across. Ellis then had a bit of fortune as with Brown lying game he connected with his last bowl which appeared to be going out and led the jack out at 20-19. His lead looked healthy but Chris had other ideas and he produced a great double to get into the winners enclosure 21-20.
Without doubt one of the best Finals seen anywhere!

Winner Chris Brown receives the cheque and trophy from Tommy Heyes as runner-up Gary Ellis looks on.

The Stockport Parks Open which was under threat after the loss of the previous sponsor, has been revamped by Tony Bryning and the Stockport Bowls Development Group following an anonimous donation to keep the competition going. In response to criticisms that the competition didn't encourage local entrants, the entry fee has been reduced to just £8 and half of the 8 qualifying rounds are now on sundays. You can see all the details on the Comps 2010 page.
